AMC Axes “Killing”, Adds “Area 51”

AMC has axed the American version of “The Killing” after two seasons as the network has opted not to renew the mystery drama for a third go around. Fox TV Studios however plans to shop the series to other networks reports The Live Feed.

Launched to solid reviews and strong numbers last year, critical acclaim for the show quickly dropped off while fan reaction turned venomous when the mystery of Rosie Larson’s killer was not solved in the first season finale.

While the killer was eventually revealed at the end of the second season, by that point much of the audience had already abandoned the show.

The original Danish show on which the AMC version is based airs its third season in Europe this Fall.

AMC meanwhile is already quickly working to fill the hole left by both it and the soon to finish up “Breaking Bad”.

The network is developing author Annie Jacobsen’s best-seller “Area 51” into a drama series set in the 50’s & 60’s.

The book explores the myths about the famed U.S. military installation which many claim is home to all sorts of things from aliens to nuclear facilities.

Gale Anne Hurd (“The Walking Dead”) will executive produce while Todd E. Kessler (“The Good Wife”) is attached to pen the script.
