Atwell, Lewis Sign For “Sweeney” Film

Hayley Atwell (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Damian Lewis (“Homeland”) have signed on to Nick Love’s long-gestating big-screen remake of ‘70s British cop series “The Sweeney” at Fox Searchlight according to Baz Bamigboye.

The original series followed Jack Regan (John Thaw) and George Carter (Dennis Waterman), two hard-living and womanizing cop partners who’re part of a London police unit dedicated to fighting violent crime. With salty dialogue and tough action scenes, it invented the blueprint for gritty UK cop dramas.

Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (rapper Plan B) are attached to play the leads. Atwell will play another detective, Lewis is set for the villain, and Steven Mackintosh and Paul Anderson have also landed roles in the John Hodge-scripted film adaptation.
