Benicio Del Toro Was Khan, But No Longer

This story just got a tad more irritating.

It began this past Friday with Latino Review posting a report saying that Benicio del Toro would definitely be playing Khan, the villain from the classic 1982 film “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”, in the upcoming sequel to the J.J. Abrams-directed reboot of the franchise.

There has been a lot of speculation from fans that del Toro would be playing that role so the news wasn’t that exciting. Then on Sunday, Abrams himself shot down the report, telling HitFix that it was “not true”.

Today though it seems the original report was correct to some extent. A highly placed source tells Vulture that Khan is indeed the film’s bad guy.

So did Abrams outright lie? Well it’s not that clear. Turns out that the deal with del Toro collapsed last Wednesday after parties couldn’t come to terms over monetary issues. As a result the filmmakers are scrambling to fill the role so the shoot in January won’t be delayed. So, as of the time of his answer he was correct – del Toro was not going to play Khan.

It’s hardly unprecedented, Zack Snyder kept denying General Zod would be the villain in “Man of Steel” right up until Michael Shannon was cast in the role. No doubt some potential replacement candidate stories for who will play Khan will hit later this week or next.
