Box-Office: “Mama” Tops, “Last Stand” Flops

It was a good weekend to be Jessica Chastain, and a bad one to be Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Despite mixed reviews, the Guillermo del Toro-produced supernatural thriller “Mama” topped the weekend box-office with a $ 28 million haul, raking in almost double its $ 15 million budget from Friday to Sunday.

“Mama” star Jessica Chastain saw her other film of the moment, “Zero Dark Thirty,” come in second with $ 17.6 million in its fifth week of release. This appears to be the first time the same actor has had leading roles in the #1 & #2 film at the box-office since Leonardo DiCaprio with “Titanic” and “The Man with the Iron Mask” back in early 1998.

“Silver Linings Playbook” expanded nationwide and came in third with $ 11.4 million. In fourth was the newly opened city corruption drama “Broken City” with $ 9 million, the worst opening for a Mark Wahlberg film since 2001’s “Rock Star”.

The other wide release of the week was the return of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to a big screen leading role with “The Last Stand.” Despite a high profile online press junket (money well spent there), the film bombed on opening and barely made it into tenth place with $ 6.3 million. In fact, this marks the worst opening for an Arnie film since “Raw Deal” all the way back in 1986.

Finally, “Skyfall” crossed the $ 300 million domestic mark – only the fourth film of 2012 to do so. Worldwide, it has now passed the highest grossing “Star Wars” film (Phantom Menace) and sits as the eleventh highest grossing film of all time with $ 1,034 million.
