DC Still Hopes For “Lantern” Sequel

Despite the costly failure of the first film, DC Entertainment’s CCO Geoff Johns is hopeful there’ll be another “Green Lantern” film according to Heat Vision.

Speaking on a panel at New York Comic Con, he said: “There is the hope that we will eventually see one… I hope that the character gets another film, and it will be live-action again – I guarantee.” He adds that he thought there was “a lot of really good stuff in the movie.”

Time Warner chairman Jeff Bewkes however added that the recent Ryan Reynolds-led adaptation “did not live up to expectations – fell fairly far short of those” and any decision on a potential sequel would come “in due course.”

The “Green Lantern” film was made with a production budget of at least $ 200 million, but managed a very disappointing $ 116 million domestically and $ 103 million internationally at the box-office – making its $ 219 million total a far cry from the worldwide grosses of “Thor” ($ 448M), “Captain America: The First Avenger” ($ 364M) and “X-Men: First Class” ($ 352M) with each of those also scoring far stronger reviews.

Eyes will now turn toward the film’s just released DVD & Blu-ray editions to see if it can make up for some of the theatrical run’s shortfall.
