Warner Bros. Pictures, Film 360 and Thunder Road have acquired the film rights to the Mickey Spillane mystery novel series featuring his iconic private investigator character Mike Hammer reports Deadline.
Starting with 1947’s “I, The Jury”, Hammer was a prototype for the hardboiled tough guy private eye, a physical solitary man who had no qualms killing those who escaped justice.
The studio hopes to resurrect the character and build a potential action franchise. Right now though it’s undecided which book to adapt first, and whether to keep the books period or update it to a more contemporary setting.
The nineteen Hammer books have sold 225 million copies globally and several have been adapted for the screen, most notably Robert Aldrich’s 1955 noir “Kiss Me Deadly”.
Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Basil Iwanyk and Ken Levin will produce.
