“Escape from New York” Remake Dead

While four of John Carpenter’s early features have scored remakes, a fifth one in the works looks to have hit a wall.

Deadline reports that New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures have allowed the option on a remake of 1981’s “Escape from New York” to expire.

Kurt Russell starred as the eye patch-wearing antihero Snake Plissken in the original which was set in a near future totalitarian United States where Manhattan Island has been turned into a maximum security prison and Plissken has one day to rescue the U.S. President who is being held hostage there.

New Line and producer Neal Moritz have been working on the reboot for several years. The likes of Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy have previously been linked to play Plissken.
