Fincher’s “20,000 Leagues” To Film In Australia

The Australian government is expected to give Disney a 30% locations rebate worth just over $ 19 million to shoot David Fincher’s upcoming “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” remake there this year.

Disney executives are meeting with federal arts minister Simon Crean in Canberra on Thursday to finalize details of the incentive before the studio gives a green light, but Crean has reportedly already given government approval to the deal.

Under consideration are Fox Studios in Sydney, and Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland. The former was used for all three “Matrix” films, “Mission: Impossible II,” “Superman Returns,” and the upcoming “The Wolverine” and “The Great Gatsby”.

The latter has handled productions such as “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” “House of Wax,” “Pitch Black” and “Scooby-Doo”. It was also the site of a previous adaptation of the Jules Verne classic – a 1997 telemovie starring Michael Caine as Captain Nemo.

Filming on “The Wolverine” generated $ 80 million in local investment and employed 2,000 local jobs. That is expected to be exceeded by this production.
