First Trailer For “After Earth” Arrives

We had the first trailer for Joseph Kosinski’s “Oblivion” over the weekend, now comes the teaser trailer for the second of the three rival ‘Scorched Earth’ movies hitting cinemas next year – M. Night Shyamalan’s “After Earth”. All we’re waiting on now is Neill Blomkamp’s “Elysium”.

In “After Earth,” humanity abandoned Earth over a millennia ago, in the interim it has reverted to an almost primordial jungle state. Will Smith plays a celebrated General whose ship crash lands there. He’s injured, forcing him to rely on his estranged son (Jaden Smith) to find their rescue beacon.

“Oblivion” was all about its central mystery and stunning visual aesthetics. This trailer plays more along the lines of a survival drama with an environmental conscience (ie. more “Avatar”-esque). There’s effective sci-fi touches and picturesque jungle vistas, but also some mildly dodgy computer graphics to represent swarming packs of fossil record aberrations.

To be fair this is only the lower quality international version of the trailer. A high definition domestic version goes online later today.
