The 2013 Sundance Film Festival has announced its awards winners with Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale” and Steve Hoover’s documentary “Blood Brothers” taking the top honors.
“Fruitvale” is a true story drama of a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family and strangers on what would be the last day of his life. It has won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic categories.
“Blood Brothers” follows a disillusioned tourist who ends working with HIV orphaned children in India. The film took both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Documentary categories.
In the World Cinema categories, Muel O’s “Jiseul” won the Grand Jury Prize (Dramatic), Kalyanee Mam’s “A River Changes Course” scored the Grand Jury Prize (Documentary), Sean Ellis’ “Metro Manila” scored the Audience Award (Dramatic) and Jehane Noujaim’ “The Square” took the Audience Award (Documentary).
Other notable awards include the Best of Next Audience Award going to Chad Hartigan’s “This is Martin Bonner,” and Special Jury Prizes going to “The Spectacular Now,” “American Promise,” “Inequality for All,” “Circles,” and “Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer.”
