The surprise here is that the network waited a week to make the announcement – HBO has revealed in an official press release this morning that it has renewed its big-budget fantasy series “Game of Thrones” for a third season.
The news follows on from the first two episode airings of the second season including a robust premiere which scored an accumulated gross audience of 8.3 million viewers in the first week in the United States alone. The second episode saw an initial airing drop-off of less than 3%.
As previously indicated, the plan is to split George R.R. Martin’s third book “A Storm of Swords” across two seasons, each the standard ten-episode length.
However the renewal isn’t for two seasons, just one, so they won’t be shot back-to-back as previously rumored late last year.
