We know Chris Nolan and his director of photography Wally Pfister loved shooting segments of “The Dark Knight” on IMAX cameras, so much so that they’ve stated they would have loved to have shot all of “The Dark Knight Rises” in the format if it weren’t for the technical limitations.
As a result we’ve been wondering just how much of the final film of the trilogy will be in the super-big screen format. The previous film had a total of 40 minutes in IMAX format, while the more recent “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” sported 30 minutes.
A while back producer Emma Thomas indicated we would likely see around 45-50 minutes of ‘Rises’ in the full IMAX screen format. However a new article in The Wall Street Journal says ‘Rises’ will “contain the most IMAX footage ever for a Hollywood feature, more than one hour’s worth”.
Nolan himself also gives an amusing quote about his initial desire to shoot in the format – “There was a huge irony that we were told it would be too difficult to shoot a Hollywood movie on IMAX when we had this gigantic camera department, grips, electric, hundreds of people working for us. These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn’t make a feature film. It was absurd.”
