There has been a few new films in the opening weeks of 2013, but this weekend’s fifth “Die Hard” movie – “A Good Day to Die Hard” – is the first true much-anticipated tentpole film to hit screens.
There has been much talk about two things with this film – the return of an R rating after the PG-13 of the fourth entry, and this being the shortest film in the entire series by almost half-an-hour.
The surprise has been that the reviews have been absolutely scathing. On Rotten Tomatoes it scored just 17% and an average score of 4.2/10 – placing it just behind last year’s “Taken” sequel with the same average score (and a slightly higher 21%).
On Metacritic it scored a disastrous 29/100 – the same as frankly terrible films like “Red Riding Hood” and unnecessary sequel “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem”.
In terms of numbers, the $ 92 million-budget film took in $ 8.2 million on its first day – only a little behind the $ 9.1 million the fourth film’s opening day.
Now, comes your chance to have your say. Are the reviews correct and this is a turkey? Or did you have a blast with John McClane and son as they blew up half of Russia? Please let us know in the comments below.
