Japanese Remake Of Eastwood’s “Unforgiven”

Screen Daily reports that Warner Brothers Japan has announced plans to remake Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Oscar winner “Unforgiven” with Ken Watanabe attached to star.

Lee Sang-il (“Hula Girls,” “Villain”) will helm the film which transfers the action to the northern island of Hokkaido in 1880 following the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Watanabe will play a samurai holdout living in poverty who accepts a final job as a bounty killer. Akira Emoto and Koichi Sato will play the Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman roles respectively.

Eastwood gave the project his blessing last November and shooting will run from mid-September until late November on location. A Fall 2013 release is planned.

Two Kurosawa film classics were turned into legendary westerns – “Yojimbo” became “A Fistful of Dollars” while “Seven Samurai” became “The Magnificent Seven” – thus it’s only fair the reverse is about to happen.
