Lionsgate Gets “Dead Island” Film Rights

Lionsgate has optioned the film rights to the zombie-themed video game “Dead Island” from publisher Deep Silver says The Hollywood Reporter.

The game follows a family that has the bad fortune to vacation in an island paradise during a contagious zombie outbreak. The family is cut off from the rest of the world and has to protect the other survivors and escape.

Interest in the rights first emerged back in February when a teaser trailer was an online viral sensation that generated millions of views and immediate interest for the then unknown game. Released earlier this month, sales were strong with over a million copies sold in North America in its first few days and double that amount to date. Reviews however were decidedly ordinary.

“The Mummy” producer Sean Daniel and Stefan Sonnefeld will spearhead production in the film which will emphasise “family ties and non-linear storytelling”.
