More “Evil Dead” Sequel, Reboot Talk

Fede Alvarez’s “Evil Dead” remake debuted at SXSW over the weekend, with early reviews generally positive from the kind of crowd that a film like this is designed for. All reviews, even the hesitant ones, are commenting on the sheer amount of gore and violence on display.

Will the good buzz from the fest carry over to general audiences? We’ll find out next month. The studio, however, is bullish on the film’s chances it seems as Alvarez and writer Rodo Sayagues are apparently already at work on a sequel following the first film’s star Jane Levy.

Sayagues adds that the sequel will continue further down the dark and horrific direction that this first film takes, rather than switch to a more comedic tone like the original “Evil Dead 2” did:

“She [Levy] is in for a lot more punishment. Fede and I are writing it now, and it’s not going to be a remake of Evil Dead 2. It’s going to directly follow this one and is going to be a whole different story. It’s going to be more like the second half of this film. It’s going to be more over-the-top; the escalation is going to continue.”

Meanwhile, original series producer Bob Tapert and actor Bruce Campbell have spoken more about a fourth film in the original incarnation of the series. To avoid confusion though, they’re calling it “Army of Darkness 2”. Tapert says:

“This would be Army Of Darkness 2. Everybody calls [the potential new continuation] Evil Dead 4, but Army Of Darkness wasn’t called Evil Dead anywhere except by the fans.”

Campbell meanwhile seems unconvinced the film will happen at all:

“Sam threatens this every six months. I’ve heard it a thousand times. It may happen, who knows? I’m never going to say no. It’ll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy.”
