Neil Burger To Helm “Divergent” Adaptation

Having now dropped out of the running for the film adaptation of the “Uncharted” video game series, “Limitless” and “The Illusionist” helmer Neil Burger has begun early talks to direct the sci-fi feature and potential trilogy launcher “Divergent” at Summit Entertainment says Variety.

Veronica Roth penned the young adult novel on which the film is based, while Summit has already nabbed the rights to its sequel “Insurgent” which was released in May.

The story is set in a society divided into five factions that each represent a particular virtue: honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness and intelligence.

Once a year, sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. It’s then a teenage boy and girl set out to rebel against the system and discover a growing conflict that threatens to unravel this seemingly perfect society.

Burger reportedly edged out several high-profile filmmakers for the job. Production is aiming to begin in March for an early 2014 release.

“Snow White and the Huntsman” scribe Evan Daugherty is adapting the script while Doug Wick, Lucy Fisher and Pouya Shabazian are producing.
