After Universal Pictures dropped out last year, effectively shelving the project, Paul Greengrass‘ MLK biopic “Memphis” is showing signs of life.
Greengrass and producer Scott Rudin put the project aside because of financing and scheduling issues, opting instead for the Somali pirate heist feature “Captain Phillips” with Tom Hanks.
Now though, Wild Bunch is reportedly becoming involved in the project which will be Greengrass’ next directorial outing post-Phillips.
Set in the days leading up to Dr. King’s assassination in Tennessee in April 1968, this looks at the time late in the man’s life when his marriage was faltering, his outspokenness on the Vietnam War had cost him his relationship with President Lyndon B. Johnson, and his recent interests put him on the fringes of the rising Black Power movement.
Greengrass wrote “Memphis” based on his own original research.
