$40 m extra for agency to help B.C. disabled

VANCOUVER – The B.C. government is pouring another $ 40 million into the Crown agency that provides services for adults with developmental disabilities.

Premier Christy Clark says the money for Community Living BC will be used to handle an increased caseload involving 13,000 clients and to create employment programs.

Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux says she’s confident the changes will improve the lives of families and individuals.

She says families were confused about accessing services and the ministries involved weren’t working well together.

In addition to the extra funding, the government says it will work to streamline and integrate services, give families a bigger role in planning care for loved ones, and provide an appeal process.

The changes come after a government review of Community Living sparked by cost-saving measures in which group homes were closed or people lost services that were provided by the agency.
