A new coalition wants to make transit in Metro Vancouver an election issue

They say “enough is enough.”

A coalition of students, business leaders and residents have launched a campaign to try and improve transit service.

It’s called “Get on Board” and they want voters to support candidates in next year’s provincial election who endorse sustainable funding for transit.

Spokesperson Tanner Boker, a UBC student and transit user, says right now the system’s broken and there’s no money for future expansion.

“Unfortunately we can’t even begin to talk about infrastructure or service levels until we look at the core issue that is the funding crisis.”

Boker says the system right now is woefully underfunded leaving transit service levels well below par.

“Once we address the funding issue and once we put into place these mechanisms to really address the issue then we can begin to have conversations about technologies and projects.”

The group believes all major bridges in Metro Vancouver should be tolled and feels Translink’s governance needs to be looked at.
