A short strike to make a point

Workers at three liquor distribution branches are striking due to what they say is a raw deal from the Provincial Government.

Darryl Walker, President of the BC Government Employees Union, says the offer on the table shows the Government is willing to spend money,  just not on people, “There’s a lot of money being spent in this Province and a lot of it is being spent by the Government on structures such as bridges, roads and so on. That’s the fiscal infrastructure, but the social infrastructure has to be rebuilt as well. That means people have to be paid a decent day’s pay for a decent day’s work. All we’re looking for is an honest and respectful contract.”

The strike at locations in Vancouver, Victoria and Kamloops is set to last 24 hours, as workers say the proposed two percent hike in year one and 1.5 percent raise in year two isn’t enough.
