Amanda Zhao’s family still waiting for verdict

The parents of a young Chinese student murdered in BC nearly a decade ago are still waiting for a verdict from the trial of her accused killer.

Amanda Zhao’s body was found stuffed in a suitcase near Stave Lake in October 2002.

Police believe the 21 year old was killed by her boyfriend Ang Li who left Canada three days after her body was recovered.

In June, New Democrat MLA’s Jenny Kwan and Mike Farnworth asked Canada’s Ambassador to China and the RCMP to investigate why there’s still no verdict following Li’s two-day trial in September.

Officials with the Canadian Embassy say they’ve been seeking regular updates and were recently told the case is “complex” because “the panel of Judges must examine a large amount of evidence” and the “processing time” is longer than normal under Chinese law.

They’ve also been told deliberations are ongoing.
