Annual meteor shower this weekend

Lower Mainland star-gazers are full of anticipation, with an annual meteor shower set to light up the skies this weekend.

Astronomer David Dodge says the “Perseid” shower can best be seen early Sunday and Monday mornings.

“And one of the best places I’ve discovered, and have been found at from time to time, is the west end of Spanish Banks West. Out there it’s really dark, there are no street lights, you’ve got some fairly close but otherwise distant city lights, but the sky’s not that bad, and it points you in the right direction for looking for meteors.”

The shower happens at almost the same time every year.

As many as 60 meteors an hour will pass by Earth.
