Answers sought in riot aftermath

All eyes are on Vancouver as an independent review into the outbreak and response of June’s Stanley Cup riots is released.

Co-chairs Douglas J. Keefe and former VANOC CEO John Furlong will present the report’s findings today. Among the topics under scrutiny will be the preparedness of Vancouver police and firefighters to respond when violence broke out after the Canucks’ Game 7 defeat, and the lack of criminal convictions pursuant to the incident.

“What I hope for is a comprehensive review … and recommendations on how to anticipate and avoid these situations in the future,” said Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs.

Private property and vehicles were among the items targeted resulting in millions of dollars in damage to the downtown core.

Mayor Gregor Robertson, who called the events of June 15 “embarrassing and shameful” and blamed a the acts on a minority of “bad seeds,” has declined to comment on the report’s possible conclusions.
