Attorney General Shirley Bond distances herself from Van Dongen application

Independent MLA John Van Dongen is going to court in a bid to be named an intervenor in the legal wranglings over the controversial $ 6 million Basi-Virk deal.

The Auditor-General is in the midst of a court battle to get all relevant documents on the government’s decision to waive the $ 6 million it paid to Basi and Virk’s lawyers.

Attorney-General Shirley Bond says she will have nothing to do with any decisions around her former colleague’s application.

Bond said “I have delegated that in writing to the incoming deputy attorney-general richard fife, so I will not be involved in any decision making or discussion of the intervenor status application, that will be dealt with independently which I think is appropriate and so I’m not gonna comment on his desire to be an intervenor.”

Bond insists the government has released everything it can on the Basi-Virk deal, and that the Auditor is now seeking access to documents held by third parties such as the defence lawyers.
