Avalanche risk causes difficulty for North Shore Search and Rescue trying to reach snowboarder stuck in Cypress backcountry

A man snowboarding out of bounds on Cypress Mountain has been stuck since early Sunday, and he may not be rescued until late Monday morning.

North Shore Search and Rescue Team Leader Tim Jones says avalanche risk is too high for them to go up Cypress, so they may have to wait until they can use a helicopter during daylight, if the cloud cover is high enough.

“This is our biggest fear.  People were not listening to warnings.  Now we have a situation where we can’t be putting our members at risk.  So we have limited options.  We’re going to try and make contact with him from below, if we can.”

Jones says the man is not injured, just cold.  He stresses people need to stay in-bounds and obey danger signs.
