Avalanche risk rising

The weather system that’s brought heavy rain to Metro Vancouver means heavy snow to the North Shore mountains.

And the avalanche danger rating is rising. Grouse Mountain has recorded 32 centimetres of snow since yesterday, possibly more beyond the ski area, where the avalanche threat exists.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre says the risk of a slide at or below treeline is “high,” adding avalanche activity has already been observed and the potential size of slides is likely to increase today, with an additional 35-45 centimetres of snow in the forecast.

The avalanche threat is expected to decrease slightly tomorrow, but will rise again Sunday when another storm moves in.
