Awaiting LRB decision

In what may be the most pivotal day yet in the long battle between BC’s teachers and the Provincial Government, the Labour Relations Board will rule Tuesday morning on a request from the BCTF to escalate its job action.

While the union is still seeking the ability for a full-scale strike, a new proposal has now been tabled: the right to walk off the job for eight days, in a two-week span.

BCTF President Susan Lambert: “We’re trying to get the mechanics in place to allow our members the widest possible choices in terms of courses of action.”

The union says it would give 24-hours notice before the two week job action.

The response for the teachers’ employer, BC-PSEA?: “What we would like to see happen is we would like to see the Labour Relations Board take another look at Phase One, because of the impact that it’s had on students, and we’d also like to see no more than one in every ten days in terms of the withdrawl of services.”

The BCTF says its proposal strikes “the right balance” between education as an essential service and letting teachers use their constitutional right to strike.

A decision is expected Tuesday morning.
