B.C.’s minister of agriculture says he’ll consider calls for meat producers to carry out more slaughter at the local level.
This, in the wake of a still-expanding beef recall originating at a federally licenced facility owned by XL Foods in Alberta.
“That’s what I’ve asked staff to do, to go back and look at the way we have these slaughter facilities, especially in the rural areas, and see if there are other options that we can accommodate so that they can move forward with localized meat slaughtering facilities,” Norm Letnick told CKNW’s Bill Good.
He adds, however, this won’t signal a massive shift to regional production, as large-scale producers have already invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in their own facilities and licences.
