B.C. teachers plot next move

They won’t go gently into the night, but the form of teachers’ opposition to Bill 22 won’t take shape until midweek.

B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) president Susan Lambert and the union’s executive are currently drafting an action plan at the federation’s annual general meeting in Vancouver.

But the outspoken leader refuses to divulge any details happening behind closed doors.

“We’re having a debate in committee, so how appropriate do you think that question is?” Lambert said when asked by media about the action plan. “The only thing I can say at this point is that Bill 22 creates so much mischief in the public education system that teachers are very anxious about implementation of this bill. We’re discussing the full range of possibilities.”

The union’s decision should be made public Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, she said.

Meanwhile, teachers have taken the government up on their offer to help pick a mediator – a legislated step in Bill 22 – and submitted a list of two preferred candidates.

They are B.C. Supreme Court Judge Stephen Kelleher and B.C. Court of Appeal Judge Ian Donald. Both have extensive mediation backgrounds.

Education Minister George Abbott is currently on a trip to China.

On Sunday, he signed a memorandum of understanding to build two B.C.-certified offshore schools in Shanghai.
