B.C. tourism jumps 12% in March

Jobs and Tourism Minister Pat Bell says B.C. saw a 12-per-cent spike in tourism in March, compared to the same month last year.

Bell points to more marketing by his government.

“We really refocused our marketing efforts this year on the ski industry. We lifted our budget from $ 600,000, which is what traditionally was spent to about $ 1.4 million. We targeted very specific markets with those dollars and, certainly, the indicators we’re hearing from Whistler and some of the other major resorts is that they saw a significant increase.”

Bell says visitors from the UK were up by 20 per cent, China 15 per cent, and Mexico 50 per cent.
