BC hiker found by chance 9 days after injury

VANCOUVER – A B.C. man who was injured and stranded for nine days on a North Vancouver mountainside was airlifted to hospital Sunday morning after being discovered by chance.

An off-duty member of North Shore search and rescue found 45-year-old Michael St. Laurent with injuries to his hip and knee, after he slipped and fell on what was supposed to be a fairly short hike.

Staff at the popular Grouse Mountain had spotted St. Laurent’s car in the parking lot on the evening of Oct. 13, and police listed him as a missing person without clues as to whether he had gone into the trails.

Volunteer search crews set out looking for the man several days later, with no sightings, until one member unexpectedly found him Saturday night about a nine hour hike around the backside of the mountain.

Two rescuers gave him first aid and camped with the man overnight until a helicopter could retrieve him at first light Sunday.

St. Laurent, from North Vancouver, was suffering dehydration and frost bite but is expected to make a full recovery.
