BC is exporting more and more logs to Asia and the NDP is crying foul

Log exports hit a record 5.5 million cubic meters last year, twice the level of 2009.

New Democrat MLA Bill Routley says local mills are going begging. He notes the Government recently rejected advice to sell logs to Surrey-based Teal Jones instead of shipping them overseas, “Why is this Minister overriding the decision of the Export Advisory Committee and effectively making them irrelevant?”

Forests Minister Steve Thomson says that committee changed its criteria for deciding when logs can be exported and admits those new criteria could lead to more timber available for BC sawmills.
