BC researchers help locate what could be “God particle”

With the discovery of a new subatomic particle that could be the long sought after “God particle,” there is plenty for Canadians to be proud of.

The director of TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, says they have been involved in the search for the Higgs boson since the beginning – helping build the accelerator at CERN, and part of the experiment.

“Canada has invested $ 40-million dollars of equipment into that accelerator,” says Nigel Lockyer.

“Now, the overall cost is $ 10-billion, so that’s fairly small, but because of Canadian talent, let me say, its been highly appreciated.”

Lockyer adds about one-tenth of CERN’s data is stored in a huge computer at TRIUMF, with about one hundred and fifty Canadians involved in the project.
