Proposed changes to the Province’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act are being panned by the BC SPCA.
Spokesperson Lori Chortyk says as things stand right now, when animals are seized, the agency takes about 14 days to issue it’s reasons for not returning the animal.
With the changes, Chortyk says appeals will now be heard before the Farm Industry Review Board, which could take as long as six months, “And if our shelters are filled up with all of these animals who are awaiting rulings, it means that we can’t be out bringing in other animals who are abused or neglected.”
Chortyk adds the change will also force SPCA Constables to spend more time doing paperwork, instead of being out in the field.
