BC to Ottawa: Please, no more surprises!

BC’s Justice Minister says she is just as concerned as mayors are about changes to RCMP severance slipped into the last Federal Budget.

Shirley Bond says she is aware of the issue and has taken it directly to the Federal Government, “I was actually in Ottawa very recently, having been asked to speak at a policing conference on sustainability, and in fact, met with Minister Toews at that time and the Commissioner of the RCMP to once again remind them we need to understand what the costs are. They need to be determined in advance, there should be no downloading, and those costs should not change once there has been an agreement.”

Bond says the Province needs to work with the Federal Government to figure out these RCMP costing issues.

A change in the Federal Budget seeks to phase out RCMP severance packages but leaves municipalities on the hook for buying out individual officers.
