BC unites with Western States over tsunami debris issue

The Premier and the Governors of Washington, Oregon and California have agreed they will collaborate to manage potential marine debris from the tsunami in Japan last year that may wash up along the west coast.

Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire says the leaders have agreed to develop a joint communication strategy, share safety protocols for volunteers and work with the Japanese Government, “Some things may be very emotional, people may be concerned whether they’re radioactive. We want to work together to get the facts out to everybody along the west coast rather than by rumour, rather than by some other means. We want to make sure people are working on it and know we’re going to give them the truth and let them know exactly what’s going on.”

Gregoire says her State routinely monitors radiation levels and says right now levels are normal.

The Governor was speaking at Globe 2012, being held in Vancouver.
