BC’s Attorney General is pressuring Ottawa for clarification of RCMP wage hike costs.

BC’s Attorney General is pressing the federal government for more details on raises for the RCMP that could prevent some municipalities from signing on to a new 20 year contract with the force.

Shirley Bond says she understands that some mayors are reluctant to sign the 20 year deal before the April 30th deadline after being blindsided by news of seven separate pay hikes for mounties.

She said “individual municipalities can make those decisions based on the facts.”

And Bond says she’s in regular contact with her federal counterparts pressing for those facts.

Bond adds this kind of surprise news wouldn’t happen under the new deal that includes more municipal input.

She said “the new contract has provisions that would preclude this from happening that’s exactly why we negotiated the new management tool.”

Ottawa has suggested some policing costs will be reduced to offset the pay hikes.
