BC’s Environment Minister asks Ottawa to rethink Coast Guard cuts

BC’s Environment Minister has told the federal government the recently announced Coast Guard cuts should get a rethink.

Terry Lake is concerned about the Coast Guard response to an environmental emergency on the water, should one unfold.

“We have been calling on them to take another look at the reductions that we have seen particularily at the Kitsilano station when they are considering expansion of oil pipelines here in British Columbia we expect that our oil response capability will be second to none so we  have continued to express our concern that we need an adequate response from the federal authorities for these kinds of situations.”

Lake says he thinks it is an important issue and took it up with the Minister.

“I met with the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans recently I expressed my concern regarding the Coast Guard cuts that have happened I relaly feel that this is something that they have to pay attention to British Columbians expect that there major waterways that are under the jurisdiction of the Federal government will be protected and we’re continuing to urge them to do so.”

He says people in BC expect the federal government to protect the waterways under federal jurisdiction in this province.
