BC’s Environment Minister is preaching calm on the waste to energy debate.

As the Mayor of Abbotsford says Metro Vancouver better put on their gloves and brace for a fight BC’s Environment Minister is preaching calm over garbage incineration.

Terry Lake says “I would like to see the temperature turned down and that people talk to each other and I am sure that is exactly what will happen.”

Lake says when the solid waste management plan was approved it was under the strict understanding “of making sure that what was happening to neighbours would happen in a way that was consultative that everyone would have input in terms of technology and the potential affect on the airshed.”

He says Metro Vancouver is likely just examining their options as they look at private partners to build waste to energy plants.

Lake says Metro Vancouver is likely just “looking for expressions of interest so they can look at the different types of technology that are out there which would of course form the basis for any consultation.”

The Mayor of Abbotsford Bruce Banman told a newspaper in his city the move makes him furious as Metro hasn’t yet consulted with them or the FVRD.
