Environment Minister Terry Lake says efforts to deal with the derelict Queen of Sidney ferry sitting in the Fraser are being roadblocked by jurisdictional issues.
Lake says he understands Mission Mayor Ted Adlem’s frustration.
But Lake says at the end of the day it boils down to a lack of a co-ordinated plan of action between provincial and federal authorities.
“The reality is there is that there is overlapping jurisdiction federally provincially then among ministries and then among the owners of these vessels I have said before and I think it is important that we do try to get government government together on this federally and provincially and come up with a strategy.”
Lake says the issue isn’t just specific to the Queen of Sidney but also to many other vessels.
“Well we are concerned there are a lot of derelict vessels around we certainly take action as we did in the past when there is a threat of pollution to the environment but it is an ongoing problem that has been out there for years and years in many jurisdictions across Canada.”
Lake says unfortunately there will be no quick fix and any solution will come over the long term.
