BCTF declares “year of provincial action”

It’s a new school year, but many old wounds remain between the teachers’ union and the provincial government.

Even before the opening bell rang, there was disagreement on the playground of Vancouver’s Simon Fraser Elementary.

Not between kids, but the Education Minister and president of the BC Teachers’ Federation.

George Abbott and Susan Lambert were in place for a traffic safety news conference, but spent a few minutes talking about the teachers’ dispute, which Abbott says is now over.

“Yes, absolutely.”

Not so, according to Lambert.

“We have declared this year a year of provincial action.”

She says there won’t be any walkouts….but teachers will be “….calling attention to the state of public education and the funding it deserves.”
