BREAKING: John Furlong facing serious allegations

John Furlong is expected to speak publicly, after serious allegations were published against him in the Georgia Straight.

The Vancouver Whitecaps say they are working on an availability where Furlong, the executive chair, is expected to respond to an article that Furlong came to British Columbia in 1969 and spent five years as an oblate frontier apostle missionary at Immaculata Elementary school in Burns Lake.

The report contains unproven allegations he physically and mentally abused native students while serving as a phys-ed teacher.

He has often said publically he came to Canada in 1974 and likes to tell the story of the customs agent at the Edmonton airport who stamped on his passport, “Welcome to Canada, make us better”.

In the wake of his successful stint at head of Vanoc that staged the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, Furlong was named Canadian of the Year in 2010 by the Globe and Mail, received the Order of BC and Order of Canada, the Olympic order, the paralympic order, and has honorary degrees from UBC, UNBC, BCIT, the University of Calgary, and the BC Justice Institute.

The Straight reports Furlong has denied all allegations.
