A Burnaby city councillor says residents should not have to pay more for their garbage disposal next year.
The city’s council voted on increasing garbage disposal fees last week.
The new fee will no longer give people who use the smallest bins a credit, but rather charge them $ 25.
Councillor Sav Dhaliwal says this should be provided by the city.
“Since people pay a basic general taxes. So, I consider the lowest total, which is 120 litre, part of that basic service that we should be providing.”
Residents can downsize their garbage bins for free in January until March.
After that, there will be a $ 50 charge.
Meanwhile, Councillor Paul McDonell says charging everyone for garbage disposal is a fair thing to do.
“If we don’t charge everybody then some people are paying more than others, and what we’re trying to do is be fair.”
McDonell says the garbage tipping fee has been increasing for the past four years.
He hopes this use-more-pay-more method will encourage people to recycle more and reduce their garbage.
The new fee increase will start next year.
