Burns Lake sawmill to be rebuilt

The community of Burns Lake will see the return of its biggest employer: a sawmill, destroyed by an explosion back in January.

Sawmill operator Hampton Affiliates says it has made its final decision and will rebuild the Babine Forest Products mill.

It says foundation work has already begun at the site to re-create the facility at two-thirds in size based on availability of timber.

Forests Minister Steve Thompson says it’s positive news for the community, workers and first nations.

“I think it represents a confidence on the part of Hampton that the relationships have developed that will allow them to move forward with the commitments as part of the log supply agreements with the opportunities that we’ve provided thru to First Nations and thru to the Community Forest.”

The new mill is expected to start up in early 2014.
