Burns Lake Village confirms 25 people working at sawmill at time of blast

The Village of Burns Lake is confirming for the first time details in Friday night’s massive explosion at a saw mill.

A statement from the village, the local First Nation and the regional district say about 25 workers were on shift at the time of the blast, shortly after 8 p.m.

Northern Health says 19 people were taken to hospital and at least four were transferred to larger facilities. No word yet on the cause or whether anyone has been killed.

Emergency responders are unable to enter the mill because the fire is still smoldering, though the statement says it does not pose a threat to other buildings.

“Our hearts go out to the families of those employees injured and to the families of the individuals still missing, and they are our first priority,” says the village’s mayor, Luke Strimbold.

A hall has been designated as a gathering place for families of those injured and grief counselors will be on hand.

Those wishing to volunteer or donate food are supplies can call Bertha Michell at 778-669-0061.

A news conference will be held in the village later this evening.

Stay tuned as this story develops.
