Cable ferry to serve Denman Island

The NDP’s ferry critic says BC Ferries must consult with the community on a cable ferry between Buckley Bay and Denman Island.

Gary Coons says communities want to know their safety concerns are under control, such as navigational hazards.

“I think the current government needs to step in. They’ve stepped in to do the consolations throughout the province about cutting service, and I think they need to properly consult with residents and prove the system is safe before moving forward.”

The new 50-car vessel is expected to replace the current, diesel-powered ferry by fall 2014.

BC Ferries believes the move will save about $ 19 million over 40 years.

Contracting out the route was considered, but BC Ferries has decided to keep it.
