Canucks GM Gillis stands by his coach

It appears Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis wants to keep head coach Alain Vigneault, despite losing in the first round of the playoffs.

Gillis was asked why Vigneault isn’t with him at the end-of-season news conference, and Gillis says it’s because a close friend of his has died and he wanted to get this news conference out of the way.

“…..it’s just about me. I have every bit of confidence in Alain and this has absolutely nothing to do, or is no reflection on him, our relationship, what I think of him as a coach and a person.

Gillis says he meets with ownership next week and the first order of business is his future with the team, and then everyone else including the coaches will be evaluated.

Gillis says the team never seemed to get fully on track after an epic, mid-season game against Boston that had Stanley-Cup like intensity.

He also downplayed any goalie controversy and any talk of trading Roberto Luongo.

He says he’ll talk with both goaltenders shortly and the “entire team” will be evaluated.
