Cars trump transit: Study

Cars are still the go-to option for Canadians when it comes to getting to work, according to a new Statistics Canada survey.

The study found about 82 per cent of commuters travelled to work by car in 2010, while 12 per cent took public transit and six per cent walked or cycled.

Seven in 10 car commuters found using public transit “somewhat or very inconvenient.”

The report also says it takes an average Canadian 26 minutes to get to work, but it takes 30 minutes for Vancouverites. The average one-way commute time in the city is 25 minutes by car and 48 by transit.

The longer commute on transit keeps Geoff Gauthier behind the wheel.

“I tried it when the car was at the mechanic and it was awful,” he said of the commute from Burnaby to his job in Richmond. It took him 90 minutes to transfer between two light-rail lines and then to a cab from the SkyTrain station to get to work that day. It usually takes him 40 minutes by car.

“I’ve learned to minimize the stress by not thinking about (the drive),” he said.
