New changes to Worksafe BC regulations that protect late-night staff come into effect Sunday.
But not everyone is welcoming the change.
Doug DePatie’s son, Grant, was killed in a gas-and-dash back in 2005, while he was working as an attendant at the pump in Maple Ridge.
Ever since, Doug has fought to better protect late-night workers.
He says the changes will turn those employees into ‘sitting ducks.’
“until workers are protected, we have to keep on taking steps. I believe that the barriers really are the best step to take.”
Employers no longer have to hire two people on a night shift, or have a barrier put in.
They can install video surveillance instead and a panic button, among other things.
Worksafe has said the old rules weren’t do-able for businesses.
DePatie was speaking on CKNW’s The World Today Weekend.
